Historic River Crossing Approaches Magic Milestone

by Nathan Tilbury

The ferry crossing that gave the Wisemans Ferry township its name, was established by Solomon Wiseman in 1827 to assist with supplying the convicts building the road. When the road opened the ferry became a crucial link over the Hawkesbury River.

With its bicentenary fast approaching and to ensure this occasion will be one to remember, a local-resident-committee has been established to plan commemorations for 2027.

With the longest continuous river crossing in Australia, Wisemans Ferry is a river township with deep cultural, social, and historical significance. This makes the area a wonderful place to both live and visit, with tourism the major industry in the area today.

The ferry’s bicentenary presents a unique opportunity to bring together residents, businesses, visitors, and all levels of government to honour the past, while celebrating the present and future of Wisemans Ferry.

The Bicentenary Committee is currently in the early stages of planning a range of activities and events to mark this special occasion.

With Wisemans Ferry’s in a unique location, at the junction of multiple government boundaries at all levels, the committee has already had early engagement and positive commitments of support from all representatives.

The Bicentenary Committee will continue to keep the community informed as commemoration ideas evolve and how individuals or businesses can get involved. Support and feedback throughout the process are very welcome.
