Flint and Steel track

Do you like quiet, secluded beaches nestled in beautiful bushland? This walk follows a scenic track down to the gorgeous Flint and Steel Beach, which provides views across the Hawkesbury River to landmarks such as Lion Island, Patonga and Box Head.
The walk passes through palm, acacia and grass tree forests. There is a great diversity of flora and some fantastic sandstone rock formations along the way, and you may even see a goanna or echidna beside the track. The track is well marked and ends on the beautiful sandy beach.
The walks starts from the signposted ‘Flint and Steel track walk’ car park about 2km before the end of West Head Rd. Start from the carpark by following the signposted track for just shy of 350m to come to a three-way intersection. Here you veer right to follow the ‘Flint and Steel Beach 700m’ sign down to the beach. It is always a good idea to turn around when you find a beach to make a mental note as to where the track enters the beach, to make it easier to spot on your way out.
When you finish enjoying the beach, retrace your steps back up. Whilst you’re in the area, there’s an optional side trip to the smaller White Horse Beach. Also make sure you check out the lookout at the end of West Head Rd, and enjoy the nearby picnic area. There’s a National Park fee to drive to the start of this walk and the gates are locked overnight. If you have not explored West Head you really should, and even just the drive is special.
