The Hills Shire Council recently honoured its dedicated volunteers during National Volunteer Week, which ran from May 19th to 25th.
The week, themed “Connecting Communities” in 2025, highlighted the vital role these selfless individuals play in strengthening the local community through their diverse contributions to council programs and other services. Volunteers were recognized for their years of service at an awards ceremony, celebrating the positive impact they have on The Hills Shire.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, said volunteers were incredibly generous and committed, and were vital to the success of Council-supported programs and countless other community services.
“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our volunteers for their tireless dedication to making our community a better place to live, work, and play,” Mayor Byrne said.
“Volunteering is a deeply rewarding experience, and National Volunteer Week is the perfect opportunity for us to publicly thank and celebrate those who give so generously of themselves.”
The Hills Shire celebrated its volunteers this year under the theme of ‘Connecting Communities,’ acknowledging their vital contributions to programs like Bushcare, the library, youth initiatives, and Meals on Wheels.
The council expressed gratitude by hosting a screening of “The Salt Path” and holding a Volunteer Awards Ceremony, where Anne Krajc was recognized for her remarkable 40 years of service with Meals on Wheels, bringing both food and friendship to many residents.
“I’ve always believed you can’t just take—you also have to give something back,” Anne said.
Long-time Bushcare volunteers Les and Gloria Brown have contributed 110 years of combined service. Les began volunteering when Eric Mobbs Reserve first opened and has since served as chairman, secretary and treasurer of the local S355 Committee.
“You don’t volunteer for rewards or recognition. It’s about meeting new people and making lifelong friendships,” Les said.
Gloria remains an active and dedicated volunteer, contributing through essential tasks such as weeding, pruning, and preparing barbecues for her fellow volunteers.
“I absolutely love it. It’s so rewarding to see the impact of our efforts and how the community enjoys the environment,” she said.
