The Beautiful Urban Forest Environment In Hornsby Shire

Hello Residents, One of the many reasons we choose to live in the Hornsby Shire is the beauty and significance of our urban forest environment.

Our tree canopy not only enhances the natural character of the area but also provides vital environmental and community benefits. Trees offer shade, reduce urban heat, filter air pollutants, and provide food and shelter for our wildlife. These qualities contribute to the unique landscape that our community cherishes.

Preserving this precious resource is a priority for Council. At the June meeting, Hornsby Shire Council endorsed reforms to combat illegal tree clearing. These include stricter penalties, increased enforcement measures, and mandatory replanting conditions for tree clearing permits. These actions reflect our commitment to safeguarding the tree canopy for future generations.

In addition to our environmental focus, we are excited to explore the creation of a Special Entertainment Precinct in Hornsby Town Centre. This initiative will establish tailored guidelines for noise levels, trading hours, and outdoor dining through a Precinct Management Plan. By fostering a vibrant night-time economy, this precinct will attract visitors to the area, support our local businesses, and encourage artistic and cultural expression.

As the winter chill sets in, it’s also the time when some residents may consider pile burns to manage vegetation, reduce fire hazards, and dispose of organic material. Given the coexistence of bushland and residential areas in our shire, pile burning is strictly regulated. Please ensure you review and follow the RFS requirements before proceeding with any burns this season, keeping in mind where burn offs may affect the elderly or children with breathing difficulties.

For those looking to embrace the colder months, why not join one of our free guided bushwalks? These walks are a fantastic way to explore and connect with our stunning natural environment. Professional guides will share fascinating insights into the cultural history of the area. With options for all fitness levels—from easy strolls to challenging hikes, and even activities designed for children—there’s something for everyone. Please note, these events are exclusively for Hornsby Shire residents.
