Six members of the Dural Country Club Fishing Club have recently come back from a week’s fishing in the Tiwi Islands, at the Melville Island Fishing Lodge. All six members had a very enjoyable time fishing and observing all the wildlife this part of our country has to offer. As this Island and the fishing lodge is owned by the traditional aboriginal community, fishing is catch and release. On the first day, however, we were given a list of fish to catch that would be part of our gourmet food for the rest of the week. Fish targeted were Barramundi, Red Emperor, Mangrove Jack, Spanish Mackerel, Saratoga and Queen fish. Feeding the White Bellied Sea Eagle (the second biggest in Australia), by mounting a fish on the end of a tree branch was a highlight. Numerous crocodiles and water buffalos were also present. The best fish caught was a 92cm Barramundi. Large Spanish Mackerel also provided a great deal of fun, while a Lemon Shark weighing approximately 250-300kg provided a lot of effort to get to the boat. Members of the fishing club also enjoy monthly charters and estuary fishing, along with fun and friendly BBQs and two long weekends away are organised each year.
