The Inaugural Gas Lamp Festival

The Windsor Experience Group has organised an exciting evening coming up on the Saturday 8th June to celebrate the Gas Lamp Festival being restored, where the past comes to life in the flicker of the gas lamp.

Windsor has 25 Gas Lamps in George Street, Windsor Mall. So, mark the date on your calendars now on Saturday 8th June and join us at 5.30pm for a night of nostalgia, enjoyment, and relaxation, in our Tiny Country Township, Windsor.

The gas lamps were originally installed by AGL the Australian Gas Light company some 40 years ago when Windsor Mall was originally built. The lamps themselves are a replica of the “Windsor Lamp “in London and crafted in the traditional Windsor style by William Sugg.

The Windsor Experience Group has been in contact with Lucy Bubb, the current owner of William Sugg and the Managing Director of the company and she is proud her company will donate a lamp to Windsor. Lucy will be judging the best lit up shop competition along with the Mayor Sarah Mc Mahon.

There will be a parade led by a Town Crier, 3 Gasketeers, a ghost tour, bag pipers and a drummer, they will meander through the mall, and bring those visiting to the Rotunda area for the official ceremony at 5.30pm. The group has organised a lighting competition to embrace the whole town, shop fronts will be lit up, as well as houses in the community.

There will be lots to look at, with an antique stall, hand crafted copper lamps, live entertainment, vintage tractors, sheep shearing, wool spinning, rug making, and knitters, bag pipers, as well as some fine food stores, loaded potatoes, pizzas, sausage sizzle, dumplings, pancakes and more. Face painting will be available for the kids and fairy floss.

The Windsor Experience Group is dedicated to keeping the heritage alive and have been involved in creating some beautiful murals in Baker Street, hanging baskets in Windsor Mall, and recently they donated some new pots to Council for the Mall.

The group has only been going for just over a year and has some 168 members. Our membership is mainly people who own businesses in the main Street of Windsor. Anyone who is interested in joining the group can contact us by email to [email protected] or contact Gae on 0418 491 288. Meetings are fortnightly at Delicious Desserts, Upstairs, 123 George Street on Thursdays at 5pm. All welcome. Membership fees are $5 annually.

McQuade Park will host horse and carriage rides, and Holland’s paddock behind Windsor Riverview will have sheep shearing, wool spinning, rug making and vintage tractors.

Hawkesbury City Council have partly sponsored this event, The Hawkesbury Independent, Guy Stuff, Lollies N Stuff, and Delicious Desserts. The major sponsor is the Windsor Experience Group.

The Windsor Sunday markets will be on Sunday and Monday, so another excuse to come and visit Windsor. Step back in time, get away from the normal stresses in your busy lives and visit our charming township, soaking up the ambience of colonial architecture, and the enduring spirit that keeps its heritage alive.
