A reader sent in this beautiful photo of a Satin Bowerbird’s bower discovered on his property at Central MacDonald.
Satin Bowerbirds are amazing birds who build these intricate ‘bowers’ as a way to entice and court female birds in order to mate. The males are a brilliant glossy blue-black and the females are more of an olive green with a buff yellow underside with brown ‘scale’ pattern. Both genders have blue – almost violet eyes.
The male bowerbird decorates his bower with an array of coloured objects (mostly blue) including feathers, berries, flowers and pieces of household detritus. In this photo we can see plastic caps and pieces of blue masking tape snavelled from some building work that was being done on the property.
