Dural Scouts Triumph at Deep Pass Creek Adventure

Members of the Dural Scout Group recently embarked on a challenging two-day outdoor adventure through the Blue Mountains National Park, trekking from their base camp near Lithgow into some of the region’s most striking terrain.

The group’s first major challenge was Deep Pass Creek, a watercourse that winds along the floor of a steep 30- to 40-metre canyon. Scouts navigated sections of icy water and relied on fixed ropes to scale rocky cliff faces as they made their way upstream. Despite the demanding conditions, the young hikers were rewarded with sightings of local wildlife, including fish and yabbies inhabiting the clear mountain pools.

The adventure continued with a visit to the famed Glow Worm Tunnel, where the group paused in darkness to observe thousands of bioluminescent glow worms illuminating the cave walls—a spectacle that left many in quiet awe.

On the second morning, the Scouts set out once again, climbing to several scenic lookouts surrounding the valley. After taking in panoramic views of the rugged landscape, the group spent time exploring nearby caves, rounding out what leaders described as an enriching and memorable outdoor experience.

Scouting has long been known for offering young people hands-on opportunities to develop resilience, teamwork, and a love of the outdoors. Dural Scout Group is currently welcoming new members, with programs available for ages 5 to 25, including Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, and Venturers. Adults interested in volunteering as leaders are also encouraged to get involved, with full training provided at no cost.
