Politicians Discuss Local Telco Failures

Federal Member for Berowra Julian Leeser last month met with local residents impacted by “telco failures”, as he vows to continue fighting for better services for the local community.

Mr Leeser hosted Shadow Minister for Communications Sarah Henderson on the visit to Glenorie and surrounds to discuss how the telecommunications issues are having an “ongoing, serious impact on their quality of life”.

“Access to mobile services is a right, and there are too many families and businesses that have been going without,” he said.

“There have been five major flood events along the Hawkesbury River in the past two years, which has emphasised yet again the danger in not being able to contact emergency services when they are needed most.”

“There are many areas in the electorate still on Telstra ADSL. Poor reception and internet connection has also affected the viability of local businesses, with some GPs struggling to facilitate reliable telehealth appointments, an essential service for so many during the COVID lockdowns.”

The visit concluded with a round table discussion at the Glenorie RFS, with the two politicians hearing stories from families who struggled with telecommunications, particularly during the recent bushfires and flooding events.

“The RFS was often without any means of communication, preventing them from contacting those at risk of flooding and hampering rescue efforts,” Mr Leeser said.

“I was glad Shadow Minister Henderson was able to see firsthand, the dangers that our community faces every day due to poor telco. I will continue to fight for better telco both in our community and across Australia.”
