From local History Cottage: Our photograph for this month is of a family tree and a graphic example of the special nature of our community.
It was used to introduce the guest speaker, Dr Lesley Harbon. She spoke of six women associated with the Roughley Family who, over six generations, played a part in the social history of the interlocking families who farmed our district.
In the audience were those whose names are on the tree, along with many others who are part of the story and who still live in it. An interesting and enjoyable afternoon. As usual animated recollections and questions followed over tea. It is gratifying to see how popular the Society talks on local history have become.
On the 29th September a group of members will take part in a tour of half of Sydney Harbour, conducted by the Navy Historical Society. Tours for 2024 are now being planned with a one day in Parramatta and two days in Lithgow.
The Society’s Annual General Meeting will be held in the Uniting Church, Galston, on Saturday the 10th October at 2.00pm.
A enjoyable part of the afternoon is a Show and Tell. Here members and visitors bring an object, of any nature, and give a short explanation of why it is of special significance to them. This is always a demonstration of the wide interests people have and a chance to share knowledge. The Society would welcome help in its work within community.
The last meeting for the year will be on the 11th November at 2.00pm in the Uniting Church, Galston. The guest speaker will be Dr Don. Napper and his topic is Francis Greenway. Dr Napper has spoken to our society on several occasions and members look forward to his return.
