Autumn is Here and It’s Time To Plant…

by Barry Lees

The scorching heat of summer is fading and the soil is still warm – what an opportunity to plant something! We suggest you plant natives, and lots of them. Plant trees, shrubs, groundcovers and grasses. Enjoy the birds, animals and insects that have come to live in their new home – the one you provided. It makes you feel really good.

Some landowners have big areas of lawn. They spend many hours every week picking up sticks and mowing. This makes a lot of noise and costs money. They think the end result looks nice, but it is just a biological desert!

Mother Nature would be more impressed if some or all of the lawn was planted out with trees and shrubs. For our Landowner, this would mean a change in mindset – do we want to live with Nature or continually fight it?

Still Creek Landcare is your local Landcare group. We are keen to see fewer empty paddocks, less lawns, less weeds like privet and lantana, more local native trees and shrubs, more native wildlife, more residents living close to nature. We are able to help residents do this by giving them free native trees, shrubs and groundcovers.

If you want, we can come to your property and advise on what plants would suit your location. There are no hidden agendas here – we just love the bush and want more people to do likewise.
