Glenorie Probus Club Activities

Glenorie Probus Club has started the year with a tour of the National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour. This was a fascinating day with many interesting boats and other naval items which are part of our history.

The items on display range over the past few centuries from aboriginal craft to Kay Cottees round the world boat “First Lady” which attracted a lot of interest.

The replica of the Duyfken attracted attention as well. The original boat was built in 1595 and in 1606 sailed to Northern Australia with the first Europeans to visit the continent on board.

The opportunity to Walk through an Oberon Class submarine was a lesson for all on submariner life. The Deep water diving Ball also fascinated everybody as they considered being in the unit as it dropped to the ocean depths. The tour was a great experience for those who attended.

The club also attended a presentation at Glenorie RSL organized by Ralph Steele of the Bendigo Bank on spotting and avoiding scams. Given the current high occurrence of scams, this was very timely information and an important warning of how scans that appear innocent can occur in a large range of activities. The presentation was made by a representative from ACCC who was highly trained in the area. A worthwhile and timely event.

The guest speaker for February was David Short of the Dubbo Support Group of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. David outlined the history of the service including original photographs. He then explained how the duties of the service have changed over time to now being 25% emergency work and 75% Medical, Dental and Educational services.

The Club meets at 11.00am on the 4th Wednesday of the month at Glenorie RSL and new members are welcome.
