Middle Dural Scouts Zoom Away from Virtuality

All four sections from Joeys to Venturers have now moved back from virtual to real meetings, although so far mainly been out of the Scouts Hall.

Joeys have been learning how to cook marshmallows with a Hobo stove (Mainly baked bean cans!) and also how to put the fires out with an extinguisher.

Cubs have been very busy with a bushcraft night. They were tasked with collecting rocks and sticks to create a safely enclosed fire. Then sent to collect bush sticks to build a tripod over the top of the fire to hang a billy of water and boil it. Finally, they brought their own damper mix from home and wrapped the dough around a stick to cook and enjoy eating it. Not every cub managed to get through every stage, but it was fun trying.

The Cubs also made first use of the Hall by learning some Auslan sign language, then played games to practice. Afterwards, they watched TV to listen and sign and their way through a music video “The Seekers – I am Australian” Auslan version. They then danced off to the Nutbush City Limits music video.

Both Scouts and Venturer level youngsters spent a couple of nights developing their bush cooking skills in the hope that one day soon they might be allowed to hike again.

The scouts cooked in Halloween costume one night. If your children are interested in joining First Dural at any level, please contact Warwick Mills on 0417 689 571 or [email protected].
