Discover Your Summer Staycation in the Bushland Shire

Hornsby Shire Council is encouraging locals and visitors alike to embrace the joys of summer by exploring the district’s wide range of recreational offerings.

With an abundance of scenic walking trails, picturesque picnic spots, and opportunities for water sports, there’s no better time to discover hidden gems right in your own backyard. The Council has lined up a range of summer activities to provide memorable experiences for all ages.

For nature enthusiasts, Crosslands Reserve in Hornsby Heights provides a serene backdrop for picnics, camping, and kayaking within the stunning Berowra Valley National Park. Families can also use facilities such as a playground and a bike track to keep children entertained.

Children can participate in engaging events such as “Play Hide and Go Creek,” where young adventurers search for the cheeky freshwater spiny crayfish, Craig, while learning about waterway conservation. Additionally, the Big Summer Read challenge at Hornsby Shire Libraries offers exciting incentives to foster a love of reading among young participants.

Visitors can also explore vibrant markets at Hornsby Mall, enjoy meals at local cafes, or visit the Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre for a creative outlet. For those looking to stay active, both the Hornsby and Galston Aquatic and Leisure Centres offer swimming, fitness classes, and gym access in a comfortable, air-conditioned environment.

Outdoor enthusiasts can exercise in lush parks such as Rofe Park, Berry Park, and Ruddock Park, which offer fitness equipment and ample space for walking and running.

Fagan Park is a prime picnic destination, featuring lakes, manicured gardens, and barbecue facilities. This award-winning attraction will also host the Council’s Australia Day celebration, “Fun, Food and Live Beats!” on January 26th, beginning at 10:30 AM.

Families can visit the recently opened Brickpit Park Playground in Thornleigh, where older children can challenge themselves on a junior ninja course, while younger children can enjoy water-play features to help them cool off on hot summer days.

Adventurers can explore the newly constructed Kangaroo Point Boardwalk in Brooklyn, a one-kilometre path that showcases the area’s stunning mangroves and bushland. After a refreshing walk or cycle, visitors can unwind at the nearby Brooklyn Baths.

For a day filled with outdoor excitement, a trip to Wisemans Ferry on the Hawkesbury River offers a perfect escape. The charming village features a three-lane boat ramp, amenities, and a new playground, along with opportunities for kayaking and picnicking by the water.

“There’s so much to enjoy in Hornsby Shire during the summer months – from cooling off at one of our aquatic centres to relaxing under a shady tree with a book from the library,” said Hornsby Shire Council Mayor Warren Waddell. “It’s easy to make the most of the season without spending a fortune, with plenty of options to stay active, connected, and unwind close to home.”
