Once again Hillside is the Champion School on handicap at the recent Beecroft Zone Swimming Carnival. This is the fifth year in a row that our students have been so successful. On the day, our awesome swimmers were first in the Small School Relay finals. They then represented the school at the Sydney North Swimming Carnival where they were again first, improving their time by over ten seconds. The team will now be swimming at the NSW State Swimming Carnival later this term. A wonderful achievement for our students.
Students participate in regular physical activities during the week. On Mondays students are improving their fundamental movement skills, such as kicking, throwing and catching during fitness activities. After morning tea everyday all students enjoy skipping activities both individual and group. It is wonderful seeing everyone’s confidence and ability grow over the term. On Fridays the students enjoy whole school sport games where they are able to consolidate their ball skills learnt during fitness lessons. With the Small School Cross Country fast approaching early next term, all students are enjoying regular runs around our extensive school grounds to improve their stamina.
The school has incorporated a number of evidence based wellbeing programs for our students. The Bounce Back program is a multiple award winning positive education approach to wellbeing, resilience and social-emotional learning for primary school children. The Smiling Mind is a mindfulness program which enables students to be more focussed and more engaged learners. All students are thoroughly enjoying participating in these programs and teachers are seeing the benefits in the classrooms.
Our student leadership program ensures our senior students develop skills that carry through to high school. Every one of our Year 6 students is a librarian, sports leader and school leader giving each one an increased sense of responsibility and providing an avenue for shy students to blossom.
