The Hills Shire celebrated its local heroes at the 2026 Australia Day Awards Ceremony on January 21 at the Pioneer Theatre. This annual event recognised outstanding contributions across five categories: Community Group of the Year, Environmental Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sporting Citizen of the Year, and Citizen of the Year.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, said the ceremony was an important opportunity to acknowledge the remarkable volunteer spirit that underpins the community.
“The Hills is incredibly fortunate to have such a strong culture of volunteering and community service,” Mayor Byrne said.
“From supporting families and veterans, to protecting our environment, mentoring young people and strengthening community connections, the people recognised today give their time and compassion purely to make life better for others.”
“Their generosity reflects the very best of Australian values and reminds us of the power of community to create meaningful, positive change.”
The achievements of some of The Hills Shire’s most dedicated community members were brought into the spotlight with the announcement of the 2026 Australia Day Award recipients, recognising service, leadership and impact across a wide range of fields.
Taking out Community Group of the Year, Soroptimist International of the Hills District was honoured as it marked 45 years of service to the local community. The organisation has consistently advocated for women and girls, raised funds for community causes, and championed sustainability initiatives, while providing ongoing support to families and young people across the Shire.
The Environmental Citizen of the Year award was presented to Anne Thompson, whose work in the circular economy has turned textile waste into practical, usable products. Her initiatives have diverted tonnes of material from landfill while also educating and inspiring younger generations about sustainability and responsible consumption.
The Young Citizen of the Year title went to Jethro Sultano, recognised for his leadership and extensive volunteer work across community service and youth programs. Jethro’s contributions span fundraising, school representation, and involvement with multiple local organisations, where he has been a positive influence on his peers and the wider community.
Highly Commended recognition in this category was awarded to Sienna Kallas, who has raised more than $100,000 through Dance for Sick Kids to support families at Ronald McDonald House, while also achieving international success in dance.
Sporting Citizen of the Year was awarded to Sophie Polkinghorne, a three-time national champion whose achievements extend beyond competition. Alongside her elite sporting success, Sophie was recognised for her leadership, sportsmanship and strong engagement with the local community.
Highly Commended honours went to Ethan Odell, an inspirational para-athlete celebrated for his resilience and determination, and for the leadership he shows through his involvement in rugby league and athletics.
The Shire’s highest accolade, Citizen of the Year, was presented to Professor Olivia Mirza. She was recognised for her leadership in STEM education and for delivering tangible community outcomes through outreach programs that support girls, migrant families and students from underrepresented backgrounds.
The awards ceremony forms part of The Hills Shire’s broader Australia Day program. Celebrations on Monday, 26 January will also include a Citizenship Ceremony, flag-raising events, a pool party at Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre, and an evening celebration at Bella Vista Farm. The night will feature live entertainment headlined by Australian Idol winner Marshall Hamburger, appearances by popular Sesame Street characters, and a fireworks finale.
