The Hawkesbury City Council’s School Leadership Program is charting a promising path for young leaders, having recently hosted 186 students from five primary schools for an engaging two-day event.
Students representing Kurrajong East Public School, Hawkesbury Home School Group, Glossodia Public School, Windsor South Public School, and Comleroy Road Public School took part in a comprehensive exploration of local governance, democracy, and community responsibility.
Throughout the program, council staff led enlightening workshops designed to equip students with essential knowledge and skills. Activities included lessons on the National Child Safe Standards, as well as hands-on experiences where students designed an ideal playground within a set budget.
These engaging modules were designed to foster an understanding of civic engagement and the inner workings of various levels of government, encouraging students to think critically about how they can influence their communities.
The program culminated in an interactive mock council meeting, presided over by Mayor Les Sheather and councillors, where students debated the merits of a proposed park in Pitt Town.
The opportunity to present arguments in a simulated council environment was invaluable for the budding leaders, showcasing their ability to articulate ideas and engage in constructive dialogue.
Through the School Leadership Program, Hawkesbury City Council is not only preparing young citizens for future involvement in local governance but also inspiring them to be active participants in their community. By investing in their education, the council ensures a legacy of informed and engaged future leaders.
