The Hawkesbury community gathered to recognise the exceptional contributions of its citizens at the 2025 Australia Day Awards.
Sarah Cassim was honoured as Citizen of the Year for her significant impact on the local business landscape and her unwavering commitment to supporting women in business through Hawkesbury Women in Business. The group, now boasting over 1000 members, has flourished under Sarah’s leadership, providing a platform for professional growth, networking, and personal development. Beyond the business sphere, Sarah actively supports mental health initiatives and works tirelessly to combat suicide and domestic violence, demonstrating a deep dedication to the overall well-being of the Hawkesbury community.
Andrew Scarsbrook, a passionate advocate for agriculture, was named Young Citizen of the Year. His expertise in cattle judging, coupled with his dedication to sharing his knowledge with young leaders, has earned him widespread recognition. Andrew embodies the spirit of rural industries and inspires future generations to embrace agriculture and food production.
The Jeremiah Project, a vital community organization, was awarded Community Organisation of the Year. They provide essential support to homeless and vulnerable individuals, offering meals, shelter, and guidance. Their unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those in need has made a profound impact on the Hawkesbury community.
Indy Aquilina, a multi-talented athlete excelling in soccer, futsal, athletics, and boxing, was recognized as Sportsperson of the Year. Her dedication and achievements, including representing Australia in international competitions, are a testament to her exceptional talent and unwavering commitment to her sports.
Warren Doyle and Chris Underwood were jointly awarded Local Hero of the Year for their invaluable contributions to the community. Warren’s tireless volunteer work with the Hope4U Foundation and the Richmond Lions Club has been instrumental in supporting mental health initiatives and raising awareness about homelessness. Chris, a dedicated community member, has consistently ensured the safety of children crossing the busy Bells Line of Road at Kurmond Public School, while also maintaining the roadside in pristine condition.
Chris Underwood was also recognized with the Environmental Award for his unwavering commitment to environmental preservation. Through his individual efforts, he maintains the roadside at Kurmond Public School free of litter, demonstrating a commendable dedication to environmental stewardship.
The Richmond Players, the oldest amateur dramatic society in the country, were honored with the Arts and Culture Award. For 72 years, they have entertained the community, showcased local talent, and provided a valuable platform for young people to develop their performance skills.
