Glenorie Probus Club Activities

Glenorie Probus Club had a day on the river in June. It was a sunny day with no wind. They gathered at Hornsby station and had a train trip to Circular Quay where they had morning tea in a Café with Italian music playing. Following this they boarded the Parramatta Rivercat for the trip to Parramatta on a smooth river and no wind they had a very enjoyable trip.

This permitted excellent viewing of the river and associated sights from a different perspective. Following the arrival at Parramatta there was the opportunity to look around Parramatta and then jt was time for the all important lunch. Following this it was time for rewarding and interesting trip on the Rivercat back to Circular Quay. Many were surprised at the number of walking tracks along the river. Finally a relaxing Train back to Hornsby completed a great day.

The speakers at the June meeting were John Cardy and Harry Black who spoke about the History of the Black Family who were one of the early pioneer families in the district. Harry Black asked John Cardy read an article published in the Galston and District News May 2004 containing recollections of his cousin Bob Black. John and Jessie Black came out from Ireland as Bounty immigrants in 1838.

Bounty immigrants were needed to grow crops for the Colony. As well as growing produce the Black Family were very involved in early transport of people, mail and produce to markets. Together with Coach Building and maintenance they had a significant impact on the development of the district.

They were among the instigators who had the name of North Dural changed to Glenorie. Some members became orchardists and grew a range of fruits including quinces, pears and persimmons. Overall they had a big influence in the development of the area which is shown by the naming of Blacks Road.

The Clubs monthly coffee group met this month at Green Vibes Café for a relaxing and enjoyable meeting continuing the monthly practice.

The club intends to keep its members active with ongoing activities. In July the club will travel to Morpeth and Maitland to view some of the historic buildings in the area.

The Club meets on the at 11.00am on the 4th Wednesday of the month at Glenorie RSL and new members are welcome.
