“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

Here we are at the beginning of a new year, freshly equipped with New Year’s resolutions, ambitions and good intentions for the year ahead. It’s great to make a fresh start, wipe the slate clean and try to improve our situation and our lives. Usually however we run out of steam, things don’t quite go as planned or we fall back into old habits. We strive for perfection in a less than perfect world. It’s impossible to get it right especially if
we rely on our own abilities, but it wasn’t always like that….

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. God said, “Let there be light.” and there was light. He separated the light from darkness. The light He called day and the darkness He called night, and there was evening and morning – the first day. God set in place the sky, the oceans and the dry land. God said, “Let the land produce vegetation, seed bearing plants and trees.” and it was so. God made the stars, the sun and the moon. God made the creatures of the oceans and filled the sky with birds. God made all the animals. Finally, God made man. God saw all that he had made and it was very good.

That means it was perfect. God’s creation including mankind, in the beginning was perfect, without flaw. God and man were in harmony and enjoyed a close personal relationship. How far have we fallen, now because of our sin, our wickedness, there is a great divide between man and God. Mankind has substituted greed, violence, sickness, misery and death for perfection.

But there is hope, all is not lost, God has thrown mankind a lifeline, a thin shimmering life line that is offered freely to all of us, ready to pull us from the abyss. Jesus Christ is that lifeline, our only hope. If you’re looking to put things right in 2011 make finding out about Jesus Christ your priority. Join us at Glenorie Mission Church at 10.15 am Sunday mornings and we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.
