Hornsby Shire Council is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of its Native Plant Giveaways program this March. All residents of Hornsby Shire are invited to participate in this initiative aimed at enhancing our local environment by collecting four free native plants.
The giveaway event is scheduled for Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29, at the Council’s Warada Ngurang Community Nursery, located at 28 Britannia Street, Pennant Hills. Residents can explore a rich variety of native plants, including grasses, groundcovers, shrubs, climbers, and various-sized trees, all lovingly nurtured by the dedicated staff and volunteers of the nursery.
Attendees will not only receive free plants but will also benefit from expert advice provided by Council staff and volunteers. These knowledgeable individuals will assist participants in selecting the most suitable plant species for their specific needs. Informative posters will be available at the event, detailing each species to help gardeners make informed decisions based on their garden’s conditions and their aesthetic preferences.
Since its launch in 2003, the Native Plant Giveaways have become an integral part of the local community, distributing tens of thousands of native plants to enrich backyards across the Shire. Hornsby Shire Mayor Warren Waddell highlights the importance of this program, stating, “Our Native Plant Giveaways offer free local native plants that play a vital role in preserving our bushland integrity and supporting local ecosystems. Every gardener contributes to protecting our biodiversity, especially concerning our native flora and fauna.”
Each household in Hornsby Shire is allowed to collect up to four free plants per calendar year. Bookings are essential and will open at 9 am on Friday, February 28.
