Galston High School Partners with Dural Men’s Shed to Enrich Student Experience

Galston High School has forged an exciting partnership with the Dural Men’s Shed, offering students a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on learning across woodworking, metalwork, and electronics. This innovative program has seen Year 8, 9, and 10 students immerse themselves in practical skills development, guided by skilled hobbyists and former professionals.

During Term 2, Year 8 students participated in the program, and it continued with Year 9 and 10 students in Term 3. The school is already planning to include another group of students in Term 4.

Each Friday, students rotate through three distinct workshops. In metalwork, they have designed, cut, and welded custom desk organizers. Electronics sessions involved building battery-powered remote-control cars, culminating in a thrilling final-day race. Woodworking projects included crafting car frames, bowls, and paper towel holders using lathes. Notably, the boys eagerly anticipated the weekly sausage sizzle lunches, where the sheer appetite of growing teenagers amazed everyone.

Beyond these engaging projects, students have gained vital life skills such as persistence, resilience, and focus. They learned to refine their work to meet high standards and improved their project management and communication skills through interactions with their mentors.

A standout feature of the program has been the chance for students to connect with positive male role models from the Men’s Shed. The strong rapport developed between the boys and volunteers has been a highlight, with students eager to absorb the mentors’ wealth of experience.

As Year 9 and 10 students continue to benefit from the program, Galston High School eagerly anticipates sustaining this valuable partnership in the years ahead. Our school, along with our students and their families, deeply appreciates the Dural Men’s Shed for their commitment to helping our students reach their personal best.
