A Galston Gathering at 3 Johnson Road

By Clair Queenan

On a Sunday afternoon in Galston, our community came together for a special community picnic at 3 Johnson Road. This is a much-loved green space that has brought neighbours together for over 15 years.

All Hornsby councillors were invited to join us, and I was delighted that Mayor Waddell, Councillor Tilbury, and Councillor Ball were able to attend. Their presence meant a lot to the residents who care deeply about this space and its future.

People arrived with picnic blankets, chairs, and tables, and there were plenty of delicious dishes to share. Children rode their bikes and scooters along the grass, friends caught up, and the Retro Birdie ice cream truck added a touch of nostalgia and sweetness to the afternoon.

It was a simple but powerful reminder of what makes Galston such a special place – our sense of community, connection, and care for the environment around us.

I want to sincerely thank everyone who came along, especially the councillors who took the time to listen and engage with residents. This gathering once again showcased that this land is serving its purpose – as a vibrant community space.

Residents have recently been advised that Hornsby Council is reviewing the initial proposal, and I am encouraged by that step. I hope that, after seeing how loved and well-used this area is, Council will decide against rezoning it for industrial use and instead preserve it as a park. Some places are worth protecting – and this is one of them.
