Confidential Reporting After Sexual Assault

In the aftermath of a sexual assault, the path forward can feel overwhelming. You may not be ready to speak with the police directly, but the need to be heard, to have your experience acknowledged, can be strong. The NSW Police Force recognizes this, offering a safe and confidential option for survivors: the Sexual Assault Reporting Option (SARO).

SARO is an online tool that empowers you to share what happened, on your terms. It’s not a formal police report, so there’s no investigation launched automatically. Instead, it allows you to provide details, even anonymously, if that feels safest.

The form itself is straightforward. You can choose to remain anonymous, or share your contact information without requesting police follow-up. Sharing details about the offender, even if you don’t know their name, can be helpful. Finally, the form allows you to describe the incident in your own words.

These details, while deeply personal, hold immense power. They can help identify repeat offenders, leading to safer communities for everyone. Remember, every question is optional.

This process can be emotionally difficult. If you need support before, during, or after completing the SARO form, confidential counselling services are available. The Victims Access Line (1800 633 063) and Full Stop Australia (1800 385 578) offer a listening ear and guidance.

Taking the first step towards healing can be daunting, but you don’t have to go it alone. SARO provides a safe space to share your experience, contribute to community safety, and find your voice.

For more information or to access the SARO form, visit the NSW Police Force community portal or email [email protected].
