The Power of Community Sport: Hills Hawks U16 Girls Shine

Community sport is more than just a game; it’s a platform where individuals, families, and entire communities come together to foster health, inclusivity, and lifelong connections.

At the Hills Hawks Football Club, this spirit is alive and thriving, with a growing community, proud fifty-five-year history and a renewed emphasis on participation in female soccer—a reflection of how far the sport has come and where it is headed.

This year, the club celebrated a truly remarkable achievement: the U16 Girls Division 2 team triumphed in their Grand Final, clinching victory in a nail-biting penalty shootout after extra time.

This was not just a testament to their skills, but also to their resilience, teamwork, and unwavering determination—a proud moment for the club and the broader community. Despite an early start, light rain and quite a drive to the Grand Final ground, more than fifty hills locals turned out to cheer the girls on – and were rewarded with an absolutely awesome event.

The success of the U16 girls’ team highlights the importance of investing in female participation in sports. Programs and initiatives that encourage girls to take up soccer at a young age create opportunities for personal growth, physical fitness, and leadership development. These experiences lay a foundation of confidence and camaraderie, teaching life skills that extend far beyond the pitch.

For the Hills Hawks, fostering female participation in soccer is about more than winning trophies; it’s about creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong.

Following the amazing efforts of the Matildas during the World Cup in 2022, participation in women’s soccer is growing at about 10% year on year. The U16 girls’ victory demonstrates the rewards of such efforts, showing that when we empower young women through sport, we strengthen the fabric of our community.

As the Hills Hawks Football Club continues to champion local talent, the U16 girls’ Grand Final win stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through community sport—bringing people together, inspiring the next generation, and proving that the beautiful game belongs to everyone.

The Hills Hawks will run the club’s first trials on December 7th this season, at Hills Grammar. Contact the club to find out more.
