After completion of the State Selection Trials in late May, the selected birds were subject to a week of pampering to have them at their best for the National Competition in Mackay, North Queensland. National competition was intense, with all states submitting birds in the various varieties during two days of judging by four national qualified judges operating in teams of two.
Resulting from the accumulated points score of the various states, New South Wales were declared winner of the National Title for 2017 by a margin of 43 points from Victoria.
Hills Branch member Craig Buckingham ran second and third in the Opaline Variety, narrowly missing the First Place – Gold Logue.
The show circuit is coming to an close for 2017, with most breeders/exhibitors busy endeavouring to breed next year’s champions. With the sounds of chicks filling the nests, breeder expectation is heightened with anticipation of that youngster that may develop into a competitive show bird for the 2018 show season, with the ultimate goal of possible National representation. Next year 2018 National Competition will be held at Penrith, at the Penrith Leagues Club Complex. This show will allow residents and visitors to New South Wales the opportunity to attend and experience the enjoyment that the Budgerigar provides, whether at exhibition level, a backyard aviary or as a family pet.
