Sydney’s History Comes to Life

In September, twenty students from Arcadia Public School traded their classrooms for the streets of Sydney, embarking on a three-day, two-night history camp that brought the city’s past vividly to life.

The journey began at the iconic Hyde Park Barracks, where students explored the convict-era site opposite Hyde Park. Highlights included climbing into replica hammocks once used by inmates, and uncovering curious artefacts—some reportedly found in rats’ nests—that sparked lively discussions among the group.

Next, the Police and Justice Museum offered a hands-on dive into colonial law and order. Students learned about New South Wales’ notorious bushrangers and even took part in a mock historical trial, sharpening their understanding of Australia’s early justice system. At the Royal Botanic Gardens, they discovered the site of NSW’s first farm and gained insight into the ways Aboriginal people utilised the land along Sydney Harbour long before European settlement.

No Sydney visit would be complete without a snapshot at the Sydney Opera House, and students seized the opportunity for some classic cityscape photos. Archaeology enthusiasts were thrilled by The Big Dig, uncovering foundations and artefacts from the historic site, while a walking tour through The Rocks revealed cobblestone streets steeped in stories from the city’s early days.

Crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge provided a breathtaking new perspective of the harbour and skyline, before the group ventured into Chinatown and the Chinese Gardens of Friendship, exploring the rich tapestry of Chinese culture woven into the city’s fabric.

Teachers praised the students’ curiosity, engagement, and camaraderie throughout the trip, noting that the experience allowed everyone to step into the shoes of tourists in their own city while gaining a deeper appreciation of Sydney’s Aboriginal and colonial heritage.

With memories of Sydney fresh in their minds, Arcadia Public School students are already looking forward to a Canberra excursion planned for 2026. The school is now welcoming enrolments for Term 4, 2025, and 2026, inviting families to contact the office on 9653-1207 for more information.
