Galston’s history buffs gathered in force this year for the Annual General Meeting of the Historical Society, with around fifty members attending to reflect on the year gone by and look ahead to 2026. The meeting saw positions on the Management Committee filled, and a brief special session was held to update the Society’s constitution in line with new legislation – all changes were approved without a hitch.
The highlight of the afternoon, however, was a lively “Show and Tell” session, where members shared the stories behind their treasured items. Antique garden tools, the evolution of handheld computer technology, a link to de Groot of Sydney Harbour Bridge fame, and poignant letters sent during the First World War from a Glenorie soldier who never returned – each item sparked conversation and offered a tangible connection to the past.
With Remembrance Day just around the corner, the Society will host a special guest speaker, Ron McIntosh, on Saturday 8 November at 2pm at the Galston Uniting Church, School Road, Galston. McIntosh, a respected local history researcher, will present “The Lost Boys”, exploring the stories of the 11,000 Australian soldiers whose names appear on memorials marked “Known Unto God” or “No Known Grave”.
While the November meeting marks the Society’s final gathering for 2025, enthusiasts can continue to connect over the summer. The first meeting of 2026 will be held on 14 February, featuring renowned piper John Graham, who will explore The History of Bagpipes.
Meetings are open to the public, with entry free and a gold coin donation welcomed for afternoon tea. History Cottage will also be open on 30 November from 1pm to 4pm, offering another opportunity to delve into Galston’s rich heritage. For enquiries, call 02 9653 1365.
