Nelson Road, which connects Box Road with The Water Lane in Box Hill, was temporarily closed on January 19. It is expected to remain closed for approximately six to seven weeks, weather permitting, while major upgrade works are carried out. Residents and commuters are encouraged to plan ahead and follow the detour routes during this time.
This upgrade aims to make Nelson Road safer, smoother and more modern for everyone to use. Known to be one of the busiest roads in Box Hill, the proposed improvements will benefit residents, visitors and local businesses by reducing congestion, improving traffic flow thus making the area easier and safer to navigate.
Planned works include:
• Widening and elevating the road to improve safety and access.
• Building a new roundabout at Box Road and Nelson Road to make intersections safer.
• Relocating service utilities in a bid to support future infrastructure.
• Installing upgraded stormwater drainage to reduce flooding and help prevent ongoing damage and future repairs.
During the Nelson Road closure, a detour route will be in place via Box Road, Grandhill Parkway and The Water Lane. Residents and visitors can still access the Palazzo View via this detour route. Vehicles over 10 tonnes in Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) will however need to use Annangrove Road or Terry Road, the only exceptions being those who can reach their destination only via Nelson Road.
Traffic controllers will be on-site to help drivers, pedestrians and cyclists get through the area safely. The works have been scheduled for a time when traffic is lighter so that the project can be completed more safely and efficiently, with minimal disruption to local residents.
This approach is also saving the community an estimated $350,000 (excluding GST) alongside significantly reducing completion time.
Residents are reminded to drive carefully, follow signage and listen to traffic controllers to keep everyone safe.
These improvements support The Hills Shire Council’s commitment to a growing Box Hill community, ensuring local roads can keep up with increasing numbers of residents and higher traffic volumes as the area continues to develop.
Upgrading roads now helps reduce future repairs and disruptions, while providing safer and more reliable travel for everyone who uses them. The works will also help create a more efficient local road network, benefiting current residents as well as those who plan to move to the area in the future.
