Celebrating Numeracy and Literacy Week at Galston High School

This year’s Numeracy and Literacy Week proved to be a success, with students and staff coming together to celebrate and enhance essential skills through a variety of innovative activities.

Throughout the week, students engaged in dynamic learning experiences that blended reading, writing, and numeracy in creative ways. In English classes, pupils explored the numerical patterns behind word frequencies, while Year 8 History lessons focused on sharpening writing by improving the use of connectives for clarity. Meanwhile, Hub classes fostered creativity and literacy as students drafted and edited original stories.

Teachers embraced professional learning sessions aimed at strengthening literacy teaching strategies, ensuring classrooms continue to deliver evidencebased approaches that effectively support student progress.

A highlight of the week was the lively celebratory assembly led by the Student Representative Council (SRC). Students participated in the “Heads Up and Tails” game, answering challenging literacy and numeracy questions, followed by a spelling competition showcasing impressive vocabulary skills.

The event was met with friendly rivalry, and a strong sense of community. Adding to the week’s success, the Mathematics faculty engaged Year 12 students in a sequencing activity combining literacy and numeracy.

Learners read and reordered mathematical problem-solving steps, deepening their understanding of concepts while honing literacy skills such as following logical structure and recognising key connectives.

Numeracy and Literacy Week exemplified the school’s belief that ‘A small school community creates BIG opportunities.’ We thank everyone involved for making this week a memorable and inspiring celebration of learning
