News from History Cottage

This year’s Annual General Meeting for the Historical Society lived up to expectations.

It was an encouraging expression of commitment when some fifty members attended and heard a review of the past year and how it looks to the next. Positions for the Management Committee were filled. A brief special meeting, to bring the DDHS constitution in line with new legislation, was then held and changes were approved.

Then followed a most pleasant and informative part of the afternoon; when members heard why eight of them were keen to pass on information about their special items; with a Show and Tell. Antique garden tools, the changes in the technology of hand held computers, a connection to de Groot of Harbour Bridge notoriety. And the letters and cards to a young lady, written during the First World War, from a Glenorie boy who did not return.

With Remembrance Day on the 11th November so close; the guest speaker for the Saturday 8th November, at 2.00pm in the Galston Uniting Church, School Road, Galston, will be Ron McIntosh, history researcher; his topic “The Lost Boys”.

Maybe readers have seen memorials engraved with the words ‘Known Unto God, Unknown Australian Soldier’ or ‘No Known Grave’. The Society welcomes all to come and learn some of the histories of the 11,000 Lost Boys from the battle fields where Australians have served.

The November meeting will be the last for the year but enquiries can still be directed to 02 9653 1365. The first meeting for 2026 will be on the 14th February when our guest speaker will be well known, and heard piper, John Graham. John will tell us The History of Bagpipes.

Meetings are in the Galston Uniting Church School Road Galston. Entry is free with a gold coin donation for afternoon tea.

History Cottage open 1.00 to 4.00pm 30th November. All welcome.
