Achieving Excellence – Waddell Café: 10 Years of ‘Brewed’ Success at Galston High School

Nestled in the heart of Galston High School, the Waddell Café is more than just a coffee counter—it’s a vibrant, student-run enterprise that has transformed learning and lives for the past decade.

Established in 2015, the café was designed to support students who thrive in hands-on environments, offering real-world learning through hospitality. Operated by Year 9 and 10 students including students from The Hub (GHS’s support unit), the café builds confidence, communication, leadership, and essential life skills. From barista training to catering school events, students take on meaningful roles and responsibilities—striving for their personal best every day.

Named after the historic Waddell Cottage, the café carries forward a tradition of immersive, purposeful learning. Students learn to respect customers, colleagues, and the workplace, and they take pride in their growing independence and accountability. Many students describe the café as a place of belonging, purpose, and personal growth.

At the heart of the program is Mrs. Annette Fraietta, whose leadership has made the Waddell Café a model of inclusive, valuesdriven education. Over the past ten years, it has served thousands of coffees—but more importantly, it has empowered hundreds of students to grow, connect, and shine.

As the Waddell Café celebrates its 10th anniversary, it remains a proud symbol of Galston High School’s commitment to Respect, Responsibility, and Personal Best.
