Hornsby Shire Council is thrilled to announce the return of its acclaimed Hornsby Art Prize, a national competition celebrating the vibrant landscape of Australian contemporary art. Mark your calendars – entries officially open on Monday, June 2nd!
This well-respected prize offers a fantastic platform for artists across the country to showcase their talent and gain national recognition. Whether you’re a painter, drawer, printmaker, photographer, or sculptor, this is your chance to shine. The Hornsby Art Prize welcomes submissions across these diverse categories, offering a broad spectrum of artistic expression.
And the rewards are significant! This year, a total prize pool of $23,000 is up for grabs, with the coveted major prize being a substantial $10,000.
Hornsby Shire Mayor Warren Waddell emphasizes the importance of the prize, stating, “The Hornsby Art Prize provides our residents with a fantastic opportunity to experience contemporary art of the highest calibre right here in our community. It’s also an incredible chance for Australian artists, including our talented locals, to gain national exposure. I wholeheartedly encourage all eligible artists to submit their work and become part of this prestigious event.”
Last year saw Western Sydney artist Dave Snook take home the top prize for his captivating painting, Labour Plein Air. Adding to the local pride, Dangar Island resident David Collins received the Hornsby Shire Local Artist Award. This year, will you be among the winners?
The deadline for online entries is Thursday, August 7th, and there’s a $40 entry fee. To be eligible, artworks must have been created within the last two years and not previously exhibited in any other art prize. The Hornsby Art Prize is a non-acquisitive award, proudly organized and sponsored by Hornsby Shire Council in partnership with the Hornsby Art Society. It’s open to all Australian residents aged 18 and over.
While the main prize welcomes entries from across the nation, artists residing within the Hornsby Shire have the added opportunity to be considered for the dedicated Hornsby Shire Local Artist Award, further celebrating the artistic talent within the region.
Art enthusiasts, be sure to mark your diaries for the Hornsby Art Prize Finalists’ Exhibition, which will be held at the Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre from September 12th to 28th, 2025. The exhibition will be open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm, and admission is free. The selection of finalists and the ultimate prize winners will be determined by a distinguished panel of two judges.
Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to be part of Australia’s vibrant art scene. Submit your entries and prepare to be inspired!
