Household Chemical Cleanout at The Hills

Ready your chemicals, not for making scientific concoctions, but for proper disposal. The Hills Shire Council is having its FREE Household Chemical Cleanout from Saturday, 30 November, to Sunday, 1 December, at the Castle Hill Showground.

The event will run from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Drop off limited quantities of any of the following:

  • Paint and paint-related products
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Poisons, solvents and household cleaners
  • Fluorescent globes and tubes
  • Motor oils
  • Fuels and fluids
  • Batteries
  • Gas bottles
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Pool chemicals
  • Acids and alkalis
  • Hobby chemicals
  • X-Ray films

Quantities of 20L or 20kgs are accepted. Paint up to 100L (in 20L containers) will be accepted.

The Council advises residents to transport their drop-off products safely and stay in their vehicles at the collection site.

Visit the Council for more information here: Chemical Waste Disposal.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) shares some tips on how to properly store and transport unwanted chemicals:

  • Never mix chemicals as this may produce dangerous reactions.
  • Wherever possible keep all chemicals in their original containers.
  • Ensure containers are clearly labelled and well-sealed. If you do not know the contents, label the container ‘unknown chemical’.
  • Liquid can leak during transport: wrap containers holding liquids securely in newspaper, place in sturdy plastic bags and then in plastic buckets or trays.
  • Keep household chemicals away from passengers, for example, by placing them in the boot of your car.

Events like this are held in the Sydney, Illawarra, and Hunter regions and are open to all NSW residents, unless expressly stated.

The Castle Hill Showground is located at Showground Rd, Castle Hill NSW 2154.
