A group of Society members tour Windsor and Richmond on the 31st of August. Our guide was Stuart Read, Senior Heritage Officer from the NSW Dept of Environment.
On this occasion special attention was given to the evidence of Governor Macquarie’s town planning and the remaining early heritage buildings.
The group was privileged to be given a guided inspection of Durham Bowes by its owners. The earliest part of the house was built during the first ten years of settlement. After lunch in Smith’s Park, a talk in St Peter’s Anglican Church and cemetery and Stuart giving a talk in Richmond Park on the reasons for such places, we headed for home.
Our guest speaker in September was, Pamela Melocco. This was a fascinating insight into a true success story of brothers from Italy who influenced Australian architecture. Their tiles are such an integral part of Art Deco and our public buildings, they have become part of what we think of as Australian. A walk through Sydney and the larger country towns, can be made even more interesting if it includes keeping an eye out for works using the Melocco tiles.
The 12th October meeting is the Society’s AGM. Rather unusually attendance at our AGM is a well attended happy event. It is a Show and Tell, when members and friends bring an object that is of special interest to them and always to others. It is sometimes the first occasion a member has spoken to an audience but their enthusiasm and understanding listeners, make it a most enjoyable afternoon. Please come and test your knowledge on some of the mystery items.
