We are shovel-ready! Ray Whiteman Heritage Fence
The background work for the Ray Whiteman Heritage Fence is done. Hornsby Shire Council’s David De-Fina, Landscape Co-ordinator, has overseen the plan for the sandstone heritage fence surrounding the Wal Buckingham Gardens. There will be two entrances: one at the southern end towards the cenotaph respecting the sacred area for ANZAC and the other at the Glenorie Memorial Hall end honouring Ray Whiteman and the Glenorie District’s heritage. The Council will then cover Stage two with a path continuing from the bus bay precinct in one flowing design and beautifying the landscape. Park plans have been on public exhibition and approved, so we are ready to go.

We have sourced excellent quality sandstone from Sarkis Brothers of Gosford Quarries, and Karl of Aussie Stonemasons is gearing up to commence the build and the marvellous planned carvings.

Keep your eyes peeled for a call for community funds for our fence to supplement the funds received from the State Government – the Community Building Partnership Grant and Robyn Preston’s discretionary grant.

The Whiteman Family Trust has pledged monies to honour Rays’ considerable contribution to Glenorie.

Glenorie RSL Sub Branch is organising a raffle to raise further funds, so look out for that too.

We are sourcing funding from anyone interested in making this amazing multipurpose fence to honour Ray, provide a barrier for hostile vehicular attack for the Glenorie ANZAC Dawn service and to make Glenorie a ‘destination’ for visitors, something of which we can be really proud that will last over a hundred years.

We saw one!!! Platypus in Glenorie
The recent floods have an upside… a platypus was sighted frolicking (if that is what a platypus does when it is happy) in the floodwaters near the Cattai Creek Bridge.

Dr Michelle Ryan’s eDNA study in the latter part of 2020 of Cattai and Little Cattai Creeks had identified platypus in both creek systems. Now we are excited to have seen one, and if you do, please try to get a pic. They are notoriously elusive and difficult to photograph, so have your phone/camera at the ready and send one if you snap it above water.

OzFish Unlimited in Glenorie
Speaking of the local creeks, the Glenorie Fishing Club is enthusiastic about an OzFish project to make our waterways healthier for our Aussie fish. Our local switched on fishos are working to clean out rubbish from Cattai Creek “to collectively shape the future of the outdoors for all who love it today and for generations to come.” OzFish website. You and your family can become involved with this and have fun too. If you have access to a kayak or canoe and want to be part of a clean-up day in May, please contact Karl on 0414 680 457. Check the Woolies noticeboard for dates for a fun day on or beside the water.

Field “Weeds” Day a success
18 April saw 20+ people booked into the Environment Centre Landcare Field Day at the Memorial Hall. Speaker Harry Rose for the DPI presented a balanced approach to weed control and soil health, plus farming according to your land requirements. Here is another example of the importance of consciousness of creek health in our District.
