First day of Term Three at Northholm Grammar School is historically dedicated to commemorating the School’s Foundation, nearly 35 years ago. This year, however, as part of its Foundation Day activities, Northholm celebrated its ongoing commitment to academic excellence and futures thinking with an inaugural STEM Day.
This new initiative, sponsored by the Northholm Association (P&C) involved all students, from Kindergarten to Year Twelve, participating in projects based around Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) throughout the day.
These projects required students to demonstrate leadership, team work and problem solving skills in their investigation of a high order question from a diverse range of projects in Sports Science, Aerodynamics and Hydrodynamics, Photography and Video, Physics and Chemistry.
Students gathered in the courtyard at lunchtime to listen to two of the School’s local disc jockeys, Mitchel and Sol, pumping out music while enjoying a delicious ‘burger’ provided by a dedicated team of parent volunteers
The day culminated with each team presenting their final project to their peers and staff for judging and the honour of being awarded the STEM Cup. Despite the final outcome however, it was clear that everyone who participated in the day considered themselves a winner.
“It was such a fun way to start the school term. Working with my friends on a project together was really interesting.” said one student who summed up the day for everyone
