The Bromeliad Society of Australia will hold their next meeting at the George Bell Pavilion, Castle Hill Showground on Saturday, 8 February with plant sales commencing at 11am followed by the meeting at 12noon. Access is via the Showground entrance off Showground Road into Doran Drive, Castle Hill, with plenty of parking on site.
At this meeting Alcantarea growers will discuss the show ponies of the bromeliad world. The Alcantarea imperialis are one of the largerst bromeliads and they have a base growing up to 1.5m wide and originated from Brazil.
The plant can take from 8- 20 years to flower and it produces a 3m tall flower spike that may last 12 months.
There are many varieties such as – Alcantarea imperialis Rubra, Alcantarea imperialis Purpurea and Alcantarea imperialis Peter Tristram
These giant Bromeliad definitely make a statement and are suitable for pots, the garden, patios and pool areas. They also cope in full sun, cold, wind and are drought tolerant.
