Castle Hill Showground Arena Gets $11.475M Upgrade

Castle Hill Showground has been around for 136 years. That’s longer than most living Australians can meaningfully imagine, longer than Federation, through two world wars, through the transformation of the Hills from orchard country to one of Sydney’s fastest-growing corridors.

Now, the Hills Shire Council wants to make sure it’s still standing tall for the next chapter. Plans for the Aub Juleff Arena upgrade, co-funded with $11.475 million from the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants program, aim to turn the central arena into something the neighbourhood genuinely uses rather than just fondly remembers.

The designs show a multipurpose grassed field flexible enough for weekend sport, community events and anything in between. Shade structures, new seating and a landscaped viewing mound with bleachers address the fact that watching anything outdoors in western Sydney without shade is, frankly, punishing. Social plazas will give people somewhere to linger, not just arrive and leave.

The population pressure behind this upgrade is real. More than 71 per cent growth is forecast for the Hills Shire over the next 15 years, and a showground that can’t keep pace with its community risks becoming a relic rather than a resource. The arena’s location next to the Hills Showground Metro station only strengthens the case for upgrading it now.

Longer-term ambitions include new pavilions with modern amenities, function rooms, bathrooms, change facilities, a kitchen, and a kiosk, though these elements are still awaiting further funding.
