Local History Society to Discuss Aussie Hero Quilts

Local history came to life on Saturday, 14 March 2026, as members of a Hills district historical society gathered to reflect on the everyday experiences that shaped a generation.

The meeting focused on the story of the White family of Annangrove, whose journey began in 1943, when they settled in the region’s then-thriving mixed-farming landscape. Their experience mirrored that of many working-class families who benefited from changes in land ownership laws, helping transform the Hills District into a powerhouse of citrus production during the mid-20th century.

Far from being ordinary, these personal histories revealed the depth and diversity of community life during a period of rapid agricultural and population growth. The recollections sparked recognition among attendees, highlighting the importance of preserving such narratives as part of Australia’s broader oral history tradition.

Looking ahead, the society will host its next meeting on Saturday, 11 April 2026, featuring a presentation on the creation of the Aussie Hero Quilts initiative. A public Open Day is also scheduled for Sunday, 26 April 2026, with the History Cottage in Galston welcoming visitors for research and local heritage exploration between 1 pm and 4 pm.
