Back in July 1979, a new type of program started at the new church hall of the Castle Hill Seventh-day Adventist church in Cecil Avenue. Creative Activities was the vision of June Long, who, through her volunteer work in the community, had noticed a need for stay at home mums and retired folk to have an outlet – somewhere to go and meet people and to learn something new. The classes were to be held once a week and also offered free child minding.
At the time, nothing similar existed in the area and the response was overwhelming. Over 200 people registered for the variety of classes – from art, bonsai, macramé to crochet and tapestry and many more. And the children came too! More than 40 in the Kindergarten and 20 crying babies (they didn’t cry for too long!) And so Creative Activities was born. The number of attendees was high for many years but as more similar programs opened and more women returned to work, there were less but faithful people who attended each week.
Here we are almost 40 years on and Creative Activities is still a great place to be. The class numbers are smaller but the friendship and the learning atmosphere continues. The program is now run by June Long’s daughter, Carolyn along with a faithful band of volunteers and teachers and many of the attendees have been coming for decades! But there is always room for new friends. Perhaps you’d like to learn tatting, or master the use of your smart phone, tablet or computer. You may like some gentle exercise in the Tai Chi class! Join us as classes commence on Wednesday – February 6 at 86 Cecil Avenue,. Castle Hill. We’d love to see you.
